Dr. Junichi Shimaoka earned his Psy.D. from the Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology at Widener University. He has over 15 years of experience at university counseling centers and has special interests in outreach, prevention, and community engagement efforts. He is also a 1.5 generation immigrant who specializes in concerns related to living with marginalized identities, grief and loss, interpersonal difficulties, and complex life transitions.
Working from a trauma-informed, sex-positive, multicultural, and decolonizing framework, Dr. Shimaoka supports clients in the process of healing, self-discovery, and empowerment to live a fulfilling life that they deserve.
Outside of the office, Junichi is a musician in a local Gamelan ensemble and finds it recharging to learn new music and feel the sense of togetherness with fellow musicians and dancers. He also enjoys hiking with his Shiba Inu, playing video games, and challenging himself to step outside his comfort zone to learn new skills.
For many of my clients, just finding a therapist who speaks their language — truly speaks it — is the first step toward healing.
